The aromatherapist Amandine Peter comments on Selfcare1

While creating our SelfCare1 system, we worked with experts in the industry to provide our audience with the best resources. We reached out to an essential oils expert Amandine Peter, a senior instructor at the New York Institute of Aromatic Studies, who gave us her masterful review on the SelfCare1. In talking to Peter, she explains the ways in which essential oils can be used to take care of our health and prevent diseases before they are even contracted.

Pain Management

Molecules in essential oils can aid in pain management by a simple topical application or inhalation. “Your brain is where you process pain, and the molecule that helps with pain management has its effect not only through the skin but also through inhalation.” Peter explains.

Essential oils have been shown in practice to have positive impacts in coping with pain. “The linalool molecule in lavender has analgesic, sedative and relaxing effects and has been studied in post surgical pain.” Peter mentions. Certain hospitals have begun using lavender attached to breathing masks to help patients gain relief from pain post-surgery, and the results have been positive.

Focus on prevention

Peter sees combining nature based solutions like essential oils and technology as her ideal future, which is why she supports the SelfCare1 technology. “You can have many different combinations with a limited amount of oil,” Peter notes. Peter is excited for the dispenser because it’s not only easy to use, but it doesn’t require any essential oil knowledge. The SelfCare1 app is a database of essential oils mastery which takes into account the users and health risks and creates a personal profile for each user. Peter notes the precision and personalization of the Selfcare1 system, which can help target health issues before they happen and has a heavy impact on prevention.

Expertise at your fingertips

Peter says that most people don’t have the knowledge or time to blend oils. Instead, the SelfCare1 does it for you, and is simple to use for anyone, whether you are a long time user of essential oils or have never picked up a bottle in your life. You simply select your ailment or concern and the app will give you a precise blend dependent on your need. “The SelfCare1 is amazing in terms of prevention,” Peter maintains. “I can trust that the dispenser will ACCURATELY do it for me. I can take my health in my own hands and target the problem before anything actually happens.” Blending oils correctly requires prior knowledge and skill, and with the SelfCare1 app all that expertise is at your fingertips and you can make these tailor-made blends yourself in the meantime.

Eliminates Risk

As essential oils are derived from plants, there are certain risks associated with them. Peter notes that dosage is very important. There are some oils which have a high amount of neurotoxins: you have to know how to apply it, how many drops to use, and how much to dilute it; all of this is handled by the SelfCare1 app. There is also an allergy risk; should you need to eliminate an oil from rotation in your preventative care,  SelfCare1 gives you that option and also offers a substitute oil which will yield the same results. “The dispenser eliminates risk because it is customized to any profile that you previously entered in the app,” Peter observes. As Peter says, trusting the technology is trusting in science. The SelfCare1 eliminates worry by understanding dosage and being customizable per person.

Personalized care

Peter also notes that diffusing is not the same as using a dispenser and cannot be a blanket application. Diffusing is different depending on the person; for example, pregnant women must use a diffuser differently than a child, a senior, or even for a pet. Everyone has their own oil requirements and diffusing does not offer the same customization in dosage or application that the SelfCare1 does. Which means, it is just diffusing and can become toxic. It doesn’t know the user, it is a mindless machine.

Time Saving and Endless Combinations

Peter stresses the relief the SelfCare1 will offer, noting she thinks it will benefit not only her but her husband, whom she normally mixes essential oils for because he has a need for them, but lacks the knowledge. Now he will be able to create his own blends, not only saving them both time, but giving her the reassurance he can take his health into his own hands while still being environmentally conscious. Peter sees the SelfCare1 as an essential part of the kitchen, which is the hub of the household, because healthcare can become part of your everyday routine with the SelfCare1. “The SelfCare1 is going to select, in that moment,  what the best possible blend is for you.” Peter maintains. “The combinations are endless.”

As an expert in Aromatherapy, Peter has seen through her years of experience errors made by students or essential oil users. She’s also seen the immense interest in using nature-based solutions in healthcare. “Aromatherapists want people to have natural solutions available to them. SelfCare1 ensures natural solutions, eliminates waste, guarantees precision, solves concerns, and saves people money! It is the total package!”

SelfCare1®, the essential application for natural health

By Brigitte Thito, founder of Family Self Care

More and more of us want to take care of our health naturally. Essential oils, which are derived from plants, are a great way to treat our health. Those curious about aromatherapy find themselves asking many questions. Which essential oil is best for my problem? Can I combine several for greater efficiency?  What’s the dosage? How long is the treatment? Are there any contraindications? What is the best mode of intake: ingestion, inhalation, or topical?

For more than 20 years, my job in the pharmaceutical industry has been to study the daily health needs of families. I noticed that the therapeutic power of essential oils was not always well understood. Either essential oils were limited to a cosmetic or wellness approach, or those who understood their therapeutic power had abandoned their use because of their complexity. So I decided to create the SelfCare1® app.

My vision for SelfCare1® goes beyond the desire to simplify the use of essential oils. I wish to combine the ancestral powers of natural health care with today’s technology, in order to establish new health habits that are more respectful to our bodies and our way of life.

SelfCare1® is also an expression of my commitment to a new form of sustainable development. Day-to-day prevention reduces the use of traditional medicine, limiting chemical pollution and wasteful packaging.

The SelfCare1® application simplifies the use of essential oils on several levels.

SelfCare1®: Ease of use

Our application is very easy to use. You create your profile and choose your concern. For example, if you have acne, you go to the “skin” section and indicate whether this is a recurring concern. The app then recommends a custom blend, dosage and duration. It offers several methods of application and informs you of possible risks associated with the essential oils chosen for the mixture. This eliminates risks or adverse effects because your profile takes into account your intolerances and contraindications.

The recipes proposed by our algorithm have been validated by pharmaceutical experts for guaranteed safety.

SelfCare1®: Prevention at your fingertips

Why take the risk of getting sick? The change of season is just around the corner and a cold front is announced: anticipate and strengthen your immune system with an application that identifies the appropriate preventive treatment. Prevention is the best way to avoid getting sick.

The phenomenon of bacteria resistance is increasing and conventional antibiotics are proving to be less and less effective. On the contrary, antibacterial essential oils combine many complementary bactericidal molecules, thus preventing the resistance of bacteria.

SelfCare1®: the choice of quality

SelfCare1® is designed to work with 8 basic essential oils known for their effectiveness to treat a wide spectrum of disorders: sleep, vitality, small concerns, stress, digestion, and other issues. By combining them, our application enhances their effectiveness and takes into account any allergies or irritations to certain oils.

In skin use, essential oils are always diluted with vegetable oil. For our blends, we recommend grapeseed oil which will serve as a support to transport aromatic active ingredients in your circulatory system. Rich in antioxidant fatty acids, it is as well suited for topical use as it is to oral ingestion.

For optimal use of our application you can order our kit consisting of 8 essential oils and 1 grapeseed oil by visiting the “shop” section of our website, www.familyselfcare.com.

All our oils are certified by the USDA approved. They provide us with organic and chemotyped essential oils, which is a guarantee of absolute quality.

With SelfCare1®: Save money!

Our app allows you to save money. 9 oils may suffice for not just yourself but your entire family.  In addition, in the event of an essential oil breaking, our algorithm adapts and recalculates a new formula in the same safety conditions and for similar results.

With SelfCare1®: No need to think about it!

Getting into aromatherapy is easy. Sticking to it is more difficult. That’s why SelfCare1® helps you in creating your blends as well as managing your everyday life. For each program, you receive notifications reminding you to take your oils. With one click, you’ll find all the information about your custom mix. The app also offers you handy fact sheets on the different application methods, so you can get started with ease

SelfCare1®: Coming soon- The Launch of our first essential oil dispenser!

Our future smart dispenser of essential oils is scheduled for release in early 2020 and will allow you to optimize your application. It is equipped with a replaceable cartridge composed of the same oils as our kit. Our dispenser’s technology precisely dispenses the essential oil combination. By combining the application and our intelligent distributor you will be at the cutting edge of technology. I invite you to discover firsthand all the advantages of our dispenser SelfCare1® on www.familyselfcare.com.

The SelfCare1® application is in line with our philosophy of combining the natural power of plants with state-of-the-art technology for optimal use. It is aimed at those who wish to emphasize the daily health needs of families while emphasizing prevention.

My entire team and I are working hard to make the SelfCare1® application a practical and indispensable natural health tool for you!

Sustainability through prevention

With the ever-growing list of changes and concerns occurring daily within our environment, it has become common practice to learn about large corporations throughout several different industries beginning to take a more proactive approach to sustainability. Corporations such as Bank of America, Kering S.A., and Cisco Systems, Forbes Karsten Straus (2019.) have made changes in materials used, a reduction in waste, leaner ecosystems, and becoming more energy conscious. The healthcare industry has effectively embarked on this journey as well by acknowledging the importance of preventative daily measures for ourselves. However, even with acknowledgement of the importance, self-sustainability is still one of the slowest growing product areas in healthcare.

Johnson and Johnson has spearheaded this preventative- more sustainable approach in recent years, which is why Family Self Care became residents of Johnson and Johnson Innovation Labs in New York City.

At Family Self Care we pride ourselves in our sustainable approach starting with our packaging, use of organic natural solutions, and take it a step further by incorporating into our brand mission. Our mission is to help individuals become “sustainable” and to create a personally bespoke lifestyle of well-being. This proactive approach starts by making simple adjustments to your daily routine by incorporating self-care products. This ongoing process of self-care for yourself and your loved ones will assist and ensure prevention and self-improvement.

Today we break down easy tips to jumpstart your “self-sustainable” journey through prevention:

1.  Don’t wait until you’re sick!

This means, use a proactive and preventative measure to help avoid health concerns such as catching the flu! Over 3 million Americans get the flu each year despite knowing when the onset of flu season is. Reviews suggest some families avoid the flu with a combination of essential oils. We recommend a age specific dose of Ravintsara.

2.  Get enough sleep

Over 40 million people in the U.S. alone experience issues sleeping. Sleep is one of the most important factors in personal sustainability. Studies suggest that most individuals don’t even notice when this issue goes from one night to a chronic concern. With preventative measures such as calming tea before bed and the use of essential oils like Roman Chamomile, people often avoid the onset of these concerns.

Spring has sprung and so have your allergies

Winter is finally over, but you’re not even excited about the warmer days ahead! It’s the perfect season… for seasonal allergies!

Most people expect to get hit with allergies, colds, astha, flu, and even osteoarthritis!

Luckily, you don’t have to be one of those people.

Here’s how to prevent seasonal allergies?

This season you can expect lots of pollen, one of the main sources that can cause your allergies to flare up. However, there are a number of natural remedies that can help you fight against these reactions.

Essential oils are incredibly effective at cleaning your sinuses and preventing pollen reactions, while strengthening your body’s natural defenses and improving your overall health. And the icing on the cake?  Yes, that means no allergies!

How can an oil reduce your seasonal allergies?

Many essential oils have anti-inflammatory, expectorant, or immune-stimulating properties (or a combination thereof), all of which help to reduce the respiratory distress that one tends to experience during the allergy season. In addition, their ability to kill bacteria can also reduce allergic reactions to mold and other irritants!

How to use essential oils for allergies?

Inhalation is one of the best methods of use for allergies. How?
Essential oils can open the airways, clearing the sinuses and the respiratory system.

You can use them topically or mix an essential oil with a vegetable oil and rub the mixture on your chest, to clear your airways and facilitate your breathing.

These Essential Oils are your go to for an allergy FREE spring!

Peppermint is one of the best essential oils for allergies. Its spicy fragrance is often used to clean the sinuses. It is useful for colds because it relieves congestion and coughing. Peppermint oil is also anti-inflammatory, it is the ideal choice to calm the allergic reactions of your body.

Lavender oil is a natural antihistamine, clearing the airways and alleviating the symptoms of excruciating allergies. In addition, it is anti-inflammatory and strengthens your immune system against allergies to keep you healthier during this season infested with pollen. Therefore, if your seasonal allergies tend to affect your skin, it is also ideal for relieving rashes.

Tarragon essential oil is a powerful antihistamine and antiallergic. It is essential for people suffering from pollen allergy or allergic rhinitis.

No more allergies, enjoy this season in peace! Bring essential oils to prevent and treat your sores.

Do you suffer from seasonal allergies? Have you ever tried using essential oils for allergies? What is your favorite to eliminate these pesky symptoms?

Rethinking our health habits

As defined by the World Health Organization, “health is a state of well-being.”

Health is therefore much more than a state in which disease is absent.

In today’s society, we relate being “healthy” to not having a major illness. Often,  we depend on conventional medicine or pharmaceuticals to serve as the only solution for WHEN we fall short of our ‘health’ norm; ignoring prevention and our general well-being until something is incredibly wrong. There are many ignored ways to avoid your health from falling short without relying on medical norms that most consumers use without being aware of risks or side effects. As a society, we should stop excluding other disciplines that help: avoid, heal and increase the state of overall health.

The benefits of oncological treatment optimized by sustained immunity and sporting activities have already been proven.

At Family Self Care, we want to focus on what is most influential in our health, the most overlooked and least expensive solution: PREVENTION.

Before being indicated as a category of the medical sciences, health was considered an “energy of one” (Schütz, 1998 [1955]) that is not separable of person’s activities, behavior, and personal characteristics.

The progress of sciences as diverse as biology, chemistry or epidemiology demonstrate links between groundwater being polluted by the excess of nitrates used particularly (but not exclusively) in agriculture; food stemming from industrial agriculture is full of pesticides and other chemicals which are manually added; also, the air which we inhale conveys asbestos fibers and nanoparticles which have economic activity and are the vectors of severe threats to our health.

Chemicals which we considered harmless appear as formidable endocrine disruptors. The negative effects of all these pollutants can be passed on to great distances by wind, sea currents or planes and with time: the victims can give birth to newborns who have been contaminated since the womb, which can cause malformations, sometimes reoccurring for several generations.

It is necessary to retract to original humane ways of thinking, to act for our health.

The first step will be to resume pursuing health and prevention. Plants and Essential Oils at our disposal allow the 4 rules of prevention to assist us:

A healthy lifestyle will allow your immune system to react better to viruses and other concerns.

The first one takes place during the Big Black Plague in Europe. Thieves were captured in an offense of flight on corpses and were brought in front of the King. Although having interacted with corpses exposed them to the disease, none of the thieves had contracted it… Later, we discovered that the thieves all came from the same family, Apothecaries’ family who knew a specific combination of Essential Oils to fight against diseases. This formula of Essential Oils was passed on from generation to generation, resulting in the King forcing the thieves to communicate this formula and teach him how to extract the oils. This formula was kept among the royal archives.

The second story takes place in England during the same Black Plague. Indeed, the city of Bucklersbury had been saved of the Plague too while the inhabitants of surrounding cities succumbed to the disease. The explanation is that the city of Bucklesbury was trading Lavender at that time. Lavender is famous for its therapeutic properties favoring a good immune system as well as antimicrobial properties.

After a progressive evolution of the research, the active ingredients of molecules are classified from the XIXth century.

It is to René-Maurice Gattefossé that we owe the word “aromatherapy” too. The legend says that he discovered the soothing, antiseptic and healing properties of the Essential Oil of Lavender by whitewashing his hand gangrénée further to a grave burn. But this version is debated.

Between 1971 and 1981, Doctor Valnet based organizations intended to enrich the scientific research and to teach this knowledge to the practitioners. He drafted numerous works on the subject to inform the public of aromatherapy. He created his own aromatic compositions, slowed down the studies on the anti-infective properties and the anti-antibiotics of Essential Oils.

Which brought to life the term “aromatogramme.” To indicate the antibiotic actions of an Essential Oil, a term invented by Dr. Maurice Girault in 1971.

Doctor Daniel Pénoël and Pierre Franchomme introduced scientific aromatherapy and chémotype (chemical type) which paved the way to move closer to the therapeutic properties that make up Essential Oils.

For many years, Vogue has raved about aromatherapy, as it has become a very trendy practice.

Because more than fashion, Essential Oils are the true makeover. Recognized for their powerful therapeutic abilities, Essential Oils have a multitude of specific properties: calming, toning, anti-fatigue or pain relieving.

They can, therefore, help to heal our daily bobos, to manage our pains, but also to improve our well-being.

However, even if Essential Oils are beneficial for our health, it is necessary to remain cautious about their use which remains complicated.

Essential oils are not dangerous, but some can be toxic. That is why, depending on their toxicity, they must be mixed with vegetable oil or banned for babies and pregnant women.

So, of course, don’t try miracle potions without being at least informed, after all, this is all about your improved health.

Antibiotics are not automatic

Everyone is guilty of using antibiotics to fight bacteria. In fact, we often abuse antibiotics or misuse them entirely!  One thing is certain, the use of antibiotics has become more of an issue than a solution, resulting in people wanting them to go away, fast!

Antibiotics were first discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming. During the 20th century, antibiotics helped prevent mortality associated with infectious diseases. Today the situation has changed enormously, the major problem is due to the misuse of antibiotics. Throughout the years, over-consumption has led to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The more antibiotics we take, the less likely the treatment will work. According to a study published in the journal of (which journal) providers in France are still over prescribing antibiotics. Their uses are 50% higher than the OECD average and make it the 8th largest population of consumers in the world. This bacterial resistance has become a global and worrisome phenomenon for the health world, with an estimated 700,000 deaths per year worldwide related to infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In Europe, this represents 25,000 deaths per year, says Inserm (do we know the year by any chance? No worries if we dont).

Prevention & control of antibiotic resistance

The WHO places a high priority on the fight against antibiotic resistance. An Action Plan to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance, which includes antibiotic resistance. They also warn us about the ineffectiveness of antibiotics against viruses, such as influenza or colds. In fact, antibiotics act only in the case of bacteria and even in the case of bacteria, they are not always necessary and usually don’t cure the problem! Providers and research are suggesting the use of Essential Oils to target natural solutions and remedies.

Using essential oils to limit the use of antibiotics

To limit an over consumption of antibiotics, studies are suggesting a natural alternative and methods which can be beneficial to our health. Essential oils are gradually being favored as valid alternatives. Contrary to antibiotics, Essential Oils are effective in fighting against bacteria, but also against viruses. Studies suggest that the use of Essential Oils in therapeutic purposes are effective; they have antiviral and antiseptic virtues which allow us to look after ourselves and to remain healthy. Certain essential oils kill bacteria, others prevent them from reproducing, and most tackle both. On the list of Essential Oils which we can use are: tea-tree, Ravintsara, Niaouli or  Oregano … However, it is necessary to be cautious and inquire about the strength of Essential Oils, in some cases like (allergies, diseases, pregnancy). The good news is that this alternative treatment is, although slowly, becoming more common (current).

Together we can prevent falling victim of these health concerns and instead use the natural properties of Essential Oils to solve them.
